Aviation History Information
I am doing a National History Day project on flight. In your opinion what event is the most important in
aviation history? In additon, if you have any other good information on airplanes, may you please send
them to me?
- question from Mike
I'd have to say that the Wright Brothers' flight on December 17, 1903 is the most important event in aviation
history. On this date, for the first time in history, a manned, powered aircraft proved that such flight was
possible. Up to that time, most scientists and researchers believed that "heavier-than-air" flight was impossible
and not worth pursuing. After the Wrights proved their critics wrong, the field of aeronautical engineering was
born, and governments and universities began dedicating resources to understanding the science of flight and how to
make aircraft more efficient. In essence, every event and discovery in aviation led up to or followed from the
flight of the Wright Flyer.
For more information on aviation history, I'd recommend the following sites:
- National Air & Space Museum -- learn about the
historic aircraft in the permanent collection of this world-famous museum
- AeroFiles -- a nice site dedicated to preserving
the history of early aircraft and aviation pioneers
- AIAA Flight 100 -- American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics site celebrating the upcoming 100th anniversary of flight
- Aviation History On-Line Museum --
information on aircraft and the development of aeronautic theory
- Aviation History -- interesting facts
and photos from the evolution of flight
