S-3 Viking in flight with an ES-3 Shadow

One of the earliest applications of the aircraft was to coastal defense and patrol, a duty that has gained increasing importance as the dependence on world trade has grown. Today's maritime patrol airplanes feature some of the most sophisticated sensors and deadliest weapons mounted on anything in the skies. They are charged with duties such as coastal patrol, reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship attack, and search-and-rescue. Since they can cover a far greater search area much faster than ships, the maritime patrol aircraft are the eyes and ears of modern navies.
