The very first planes to take an active role in combat were bombers whose pilots dropped simple,
lightweight explosives by hand. As time progressed, the bombs became far larger and eventually had to be
guided with great precision to destroy heavily-fortified targets. Today's bombers often carry cruise
missiles adding greater range and even more destructive power. Bombers are generally of two types: large,
heavy aircraft of intercontinental range carrying strategic nuclear weapons and smaller aircraft with
shorter ranges carrying tactical nuclear weapons. Airplanes primarily engaged in close-support of ground
troops are listed under Attack aircraft rather than
bombers.
